The Time is Right For Tenor Time By Tammy Holzer Chicago-based accomplished saxophonists John Wojciechowski, Geof Bradfield, and Scott Burns join together for the first time to collaborate for the Tenor Time project, scheduled for release in February 2022. Recorded in just one day, this is the first collaboration with these three tenor saxophone musicians. Although they have been friends for over two decades, played together on various musical projects, and highly respect one another, the time is finally right for them to do this type of project together. Scott highlights the uniqueness of the group, “Three saxophonists playing the same instrument wouldn’t necessarily be often playing together in a small group session like this very often, so it was a great opportunity for us to collaborate together.” Tenor Time is the idea of Richard Johnson, an accomplished composer, arranger and jazz musician, jazz professor, and founding member of Johnson Works LLC. Richard built a studio in his home and invited these three tenors to record together. They were all thrilled and eagerly agreed. John comments, “I've always thought we should do something. Richard's the kind of guy that gets things going as an instigator. Thank goodness.” “John and Scott are my two favorite saxophone players in Chicago,” says Geoff. “If I’m going to go out and see somebody, it’s them.” “There’s nobody else I’d want to do this more than with these two musicians,” says Scott. Recorded in just one day, the process was very collaborative with this highly compatible trio, each excited to play together and bring their best. Naturally, there were built-in factors due to the pandemic -- not a lot of time for rehearsal, and timing of sessions so everyone could get vaccinated and feel safe to be in a room together. With this in mind, each musician brought a couple of pieces of music to the session, with a focus of being not too complicated, pieces that they could rapidly play, and enjoy playing them together. The songs came together very easily, and most were done in two takes, some even less. This collaboration is especially appreciated by each after the long absence of playing shows due to the pandemic shutdown. All three talked about a new perspective they gained from the pandemic. For John, “The pandemic helped me get clarity on what’s important to me in terms of music and moving forward what it is that I want to do. Just last week I got calls for something that I would be just doing for the money. I don't really want to do that. So, I'm not doing it. And I think I have come to the realization that what I want to do is make music with people that I want to make music with that's musical and creative. And I want to spend my time and energy doing that.” Scott added: “I really, really, really missed playing music with people. It was hard to navigate on a personal and emotional level. So I was thrilled to have something like this project coming out of it. To make the record, and have some sort of tangible creative output that is coming on the heels of what has been very difficult on a lot of levels.” Geoff: “I realized before this started that I was approaching burnout in some cases by running myself into the ground--bouncing from teaching and sleeping very little to playing several nights a week for like eight years in a row. COVID provided a break from that, and now one of my goals is not to go back to that, but rather like John said, to channel the energies into the things that matter the most to me musically and otherwise.” Given the success and enthusiasm of this collaboration, newfound perspectives, and timing, we can expect to see more future collaborations from this talented trio.
