Alex Austin, was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois. He found a love for jazz music and jazz bass early in life. He was performing professionally in the Peoria area throughout high school with bandmates Doug Stone and Greg Ward.  He then moved to the Chicago area in 1998 studying under Professor Ron Carter and Marlene Rosenberg at Northern Illinois University.

In 2003, he graduated, moved to uptown and never looked back. Since then, Alex has been a Chicago jazz staple.  Over the last 25 years, he has been a Professor of Jazz Bass at Valparaiso University, and he has performed at many jazz, folk and world music festivals, including Montreux, Java Jazz, Chicago, Elkhart, Glen Elynn, JVC New York City.

He has spent years performing at the top Chicago music clubs including the Green Mill, Winters, Andy’s, California Clipper, Martyrs’ and Dorian’s.  He currently tours and records with guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque (Mathgames!, Funk Brothers, Flat Earth Ensemble, Casseus Tribute, Pat Martino Tribute), Honduran song writing master Chalie Baran (Radio Free Honduras), acid jazz trio Imperial Boxmen, and guitar hero Marcus Rezak (Shred is Dead, Marcus Rezak Band).  He also enjoys performing locally with Jo Ann Daugherty's ‘Better Together’, Chicago Soul Jazz Collective, Bruce Henry, Abigail Riccards, Kimberly Gordon, Michele Thomas, Christopher Wilson, and a variety of Chicago’s finest jazz, funk, and latin musicians.
